THE INFLUENCE OF *WITEZ II

*Witez II was in the 1945 Army importation from Germany, but had been bred in Poland. He was foaled in 1938, the same year as Witraz and Wielki Szlem, all by the same sire, Ofir, and bred at Janow-Podlaski State Stud. He was the most popular of the Remount sires, especially after his sale to E.E. Hurlbutt. He was twice Champion of the Southern California Arabian Show, and won the Pacific Coast Championship in 1953 with his son Zitez, Reserve. Zitez was Champion the following year, and another *Witez II son, Natez was champion in 1955. The success of his get, including at the National level, put *Witez II second on the leading sire list for some years. He was not just limited to halter standabouts, however; he was noted for the working ability of his get, sensible horses willing to try anything. Only one was a top park horse, however, as he did not have any notable talent at the trot compared to *Bask, but Zitez also won the Regional title in English Pleasure. Another son, Yatez, sired many champions. Both he and his get had good action, probably through his dam, who had two lines to the desertbred Azrek, to which horses of Crabbet breeding owe any special talent at that gait.

Witezar*Witez II was the sire of Witezar, who, thanks to following the show circuit for over 45,000 miles, became the 1966 American Horse Show Association Horse of the Year with 4,034 points, twice as many as any other horse of any other breed in the history of the AHSA competition. Witezar's most famous son did a lot of traveling, but on his own shoes, not in a van or trailer. This is Witezarif, winner of an unprecedented three consecutive Tevis Cup rides (and many others), the last in 1972.

In 1985 a study was conducted to determine Racing's Foundation Sires. It was determined there were 9 sires lines which produced 23 stallions that are now considered America's Racing Foundation Sires. *Witez II led this list with 20 Race Horses to his credit. The majority of the other 23 stallions on the Racing Foundation Sires list, had not even been foaled when *Witez II died!

Ofir 8181Thirteen *Witez II sons are either the sire of, or grandsire of Stakes Winning Race Horses. Three of those *Witez II sons are themselves, Stakes Winners. *Witez II's greatest racing son, Ofir, was also the sire of three Stakes Winners and the grandsire of one. The remaining 10 *Witez II sons on the list, either sired Race Horses, or their sons sired Race Horses. Since the time that this study was made, many more *Witez II descendants have entered Racing's Record Books. It must be remembered, in 1985 when this study was done, *Witez II had been dead for 21 years.

Noted Arabian Horse Historian, Gladys Brown Edwards had this to say about *Witez II: ".....Suffice to say he was always close to the top of the Leading Sire List, winding up with 30 champions. His 23 sons, 18 grandsons and 6 great grandsons have given his line a total of 146 champions. The National Champion ZARABO is a grandson and his (*Witez II) sons BOLERO (sire of Zarabo) and WITEZAR are Reserve U.S. and Res. Canadian National Champion, respectively, and several sons and daughters are Top Ten in both countries. WITEZAR was AHSA Horse of the Year as well. Many have won top awards in all types of performance, including such events a champion Working Cowhorse - this going to RONTEZA against all breeds, mainly Quarter Horses; jumping and also racing and endurance events. His son OFIR (named after the Polish stallion) was a champion of the early 2-1/2 mile races here; and another son, KOSCIUSKO, has sired many trail and endurance winners, while a grandson, WITEZARIF, is the all-time champion of endurance rides. Several of *WITEZ II's daughters have produced noteworthy sires - such as WITEZAFIX (3), MI ALMA ALI FADLA (4), etc., and of course many worthy broodmatrons."

The blood of *Witez II is still winning.
